Summary

Emergency Contact meets Moxie in this cheeky and searing novel that unpacks just how complicated new love can get…when you fall for your enemy。

Eliza Quan is the perfect candidate for editor in chief of her school paper。 That is, until ex-jock Len DiMartile decides on a whim to run against her。 Suddenly her vast qualifications mean squat because inexperienced Len—who is tall, handsome, and male—just seems more like a leader。

When Eliza’s frustration spills out in a viral essay, she finds herself inspiring a feminist movement she never meant to start, caught between those who believe she’s a gender equality champion and others who think she’s simply crying misogyny。

Amid this growing tension, the school asks Eliza and Len to work side by side to demonstrate civility。 But as they get to know one another, Eliza feels increasingly trapped by a horrifying realization—she just might be falling for the face of the patriarchy himself。

I really liked this, it was good coming-of-age story about a high schooler named Eliza who works on her school newspaper。 When she loses out on the editor in chief job to a male student, she thinks that there must be some mistake。 It's the misogynies at work at her school, and she wants to do something about it。 This one thing sets of a chain of events that will change the way Eliza views life in general。 Eliza has also been feeling the pressure of her immigrant parents, and her view as the "sma I really liked this, it was good coming-of-age story about a high schooler named Eliza who works on her school newspaper。 When she loses out on the editor in chief job to a male student, she thinks that there must be some mistake。 It's the misogynies at work at her school, and she wants to do something about it。 This one thing sets of a chain of events that will change the way Eliza views life in general。 Eliza has also been feeling the pressure of her immigrant parents, and her view as the "smart daughter," (her older sister, on the other hand is considered the pretty one)。 I liked Eliza as a main character, she came off as realistic with real feelings。 She's trying to find her way in life。 。。。more

2。5 starsIt's my fault for having high expectations because of synopsis, I mean academic rivals to lovers I just love that trope。 So book is good for debut but romance is barely there and it's fast moving。 2。5 starsIt's my fault for having high expectations because of synopsis, I mean academic rivals to lovers I just love that trope。 So book is good for debut but romance is barely there and it's fast moving。 。。。more

Cute, not particularly complex。 Refreshing for there to be a dislikeable female character。 Definitely some phrases/sections that made me think。 Definitely others that made me roll my eyes a little。 Overall a mixed bag, but not unpleasant :)

I loved everything single moment in this book。 I caught myself relating a lot to Eliza and her family situation。 I laughed, I cried, and smiled until my checks were hurting。 Most of all, the BANTER between Len and Eliza was the cutest thing ever。 He always paid his full attention to her and always noticed the small things about Eliza。 The one thing that bothered me the most was Serena。 I hated how she always tried to control Eliza and never asked her if she was okay with anything, She honestly n I loved everything single moment in this book。 I caught myself relating a lot to Eliza and her family situation。 I laughed, I cried, and smiled until my checks were hurting。 Most of all, the BANTER between Len and Eliza was the cutest thing ever。 He always paid his full attention to her and always noticed the small things about Eliza。 The one thing that bothered me the most was Serena。 I hated how she always tried to control Eliza and never asked her if she was okay with anything, She honestly needs to stay in her lane and check herself。 。。。more

Wait I had to change my review because I remembered Eliza is a high schooler so I don't think it's fair to be so harsh on her also not trying to gatekeep feminism。 but again this book would be great for teenagers Wait I had to change my review because I remembered Eliza is a high schooler so I don't think it's fair to be so harsh on her also not trying to gatekeep feminism。 but again this book would be great for teenagers 。。。more

It's a clever little book, but I'm not sure what it's trying to say, outside of telling us about a few weeks/months in the life of a high-school girl。 I don't think it's about feminism, not the way "Moxie" was about feminism, though the term does get thrown around a lot。 There's a lot of mixed-up ideology, and, funnily, the person who's the most racist and sexist in this novel is the female protagonist's own mother。 But the protagonist never calls her mother out on her limited worldview。 It's we It's a clever little book, but I'm not sure what it's trying to say, outside of telling us about a few weeks/months in the life of a high-school girl。 I don't think it's about feminism, not the way "Moxie" was about feminism, though the term does get thrown around a lot。 There's a lot of mixed-up ideology, and, funnily, the person who's the most racist and sexist in this novel is the female protagonist's own mother。 But the protagonist never calls her mother out on her limited worldview。 It's well-written, though。 And it kept me engaged。 The romance wasn't too bad, either: you could feel how much Len liked Eliza, even though she seemed mostly oblivious to his deep interest/attraction towards her。 So, 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ it is! 。。。more

As a person who loves romcoms and is obviously a hopeless romantic I enjoyed this story so much。 I was already laughing along with the characters and cheering them on from the get go。 These characters hit home a lot with their Asian experiences as well as their insights on being a girl– a teenage girl in this society。 I teared up here and there during their realisations and felt so much kilig during Len and Eliza's scenes。 I wish I had a love story like that HAHA and I also wish I was as forthco As a person who loves romcoms and is obviously a hopeless romantic I enjoyed this story so much。 I was already laughing along with the characters and cheering them on from the get go。 These characters hit home a lot with their Asian experiences as well as their insights on being a girl– a teenage girl in this society。 I teared up here and there during their realisations and felt so much kilig during Len and Eliza's scenes。 I wish I had a love story like that HAHA and I also wish I was as forthcoming as Eliza was。 I found myself always asking myself: What if I was in their situations what would I do? What would I feel? Their characters are so inspiring。 I admire their bravery in facing the horrible judgement of high schoolers, admitting their mistakes and most of all the forgiveness they show。 I love this book so much。 It's truly a conversation starter for important topics but presented in such a lighthearted and approachable way。 It shows you how simple yet so very complicated concepts such as feminism are especially when mixed up with the views of different people。 Not to mention, the book recommendations in this book !!! Gotta add them to my Goodreads now。 I also have to give major props to the new hardback cover。。 it's what reeled me in Len and Eliza are so handsome and pretty。。。So thanks Michelle Quach for such an enjoyable and romantic read with such a meaning plot to me as an ambitious Asian girl。 Read this now everyone!!!!! 。。。more

He’s a man, so his job is to make money to support you。 He loves you, but I’m the one who takes care of you。” still to this day, my dad says this to me and it both saddens and frustrates me that this is the mindset of many people。 that woman have to stay home and take care of their kids while the husband goes and works。 even with beauty standards, in this book eliza talks about her sister, kim is the pretty one and she is the smart one and how when kim hit middle school her skin starting getting bad meaning she isn’t pretty anymore?? PLOT ˎˊ˗ so eliza quan and len dimartile both run for editor in chief of bulge, which is her school paper group thing。 a feminism movement starts (i don’t wanna say too much because spoilers) but basically things get messy because miss eliza starts falling for the ”enemy”, len。 when they were forced to work together to be ”civil” i kinda wish it showed that more?? it was mostly fast attraction and some drama here and there which plays a part in the whole purpose of the story but a build up would’ve been nicer imo。the plot, in terms of theme is again really great。 i liked the way michelle quach had a character like serena to represent everything against their purpose but the character’s developments were pretty good?? not amazing but good ROMANCE ˎˊ˗ the academic rivals to lovers couldve been brought out more (yes i know this isn’t solely on romance) since imo it was rushed。 there was also drama between them which i thought was very middle school vibes so i didn’t really like that either。 i think some issues that len and eliza had could’ve been written in a way that didn’t make them seem childish but they did have cute moments。 i apologise for thinking this had smut lol i really went into this book not really knowing anything about it or reading up on it which is my fault and i am sorry please forgive me sjbfjhsbfei did love their boba meet ups。 it was really cute and wholesome lmao CHARACTERS ˎˊ˗ eliza quan :⤷ annoying but grows on youeliza definitely annoyed me at first and was a really hard character to like?? idk why but she did get better and grew on me。 she is a big over achiever and she’s just a person who plays by the rules so when her and len start hitting it off, she gets hella conflicted。 i wanted to see more of the mum and kinda wished that eliza had a deeper conversation with her mum about feminism?? i really wanted to see the mum’s thoughts more because that would’ve definitely added to this storyn e ways back to eliza, she honestly wasn’t like the greatest mc and her traits at the beginning really throw you off。 in all honesty, she reminds me of my sister。 cold, smart, intense, super critical but driven。 eliza is so driven and works hard which is something i really admired。 one more thing : “This is a woman who, like many Chinese mothers, views being second best at anything to be a moral failure。” this was something that really stuck out to me。 i know many of my uncles and aunties mindset are like this and it takes a toll on a person constantly being told you have to be the best or you’re not good enough。 if you’re not the top; you’re a failure。 this book was something i could really relate to in my life jsnejfkesf len dimartile :⤷ an ’eh’ love interestuhhh yeah, he wasn’t that amazing of a character。 idk really couldn’t connect with him but i wouldn’t say he was horrible。 he was sweet and stuff but there wasn’t really anything that stood out to mei mean if you want a boba date partner than like hit him up loli did like how he played a role in the development of eliza。 you also see a growth in him as well but the way they both open up to one another was really nice to see CONCLUSION ˎˊ˗ a really good book for a debut and touched on great topics。 considering this was michelle quach’s first book and she wrote on such strong themes is really amazing。 i will have to rr this and give it a second chance in the future but yeah。 ok bye <3 。。。more

4。65🌟 “Feminism。。。it’s about all of us working toward equality, together。”。 I have to admit that romcoms are not my favourite type of novels, but I enjoyed this one soooo much。 Not Here to Be Liked focuses on such important and contemporary issues as not only feminism, its main topic, but alsothe sexism and misoginy that, sadly, is very present nowadays; at the same time that they border on racism。 The characters, at the beginning, have some foundamental views and ideals that are, so to speak 4。65🌟 “Feminism。。。it’s about all of us working toward equality, together。”。 I have to admit that romcoms are not my favourite type of novels, but I enjoyed this one soooo much。 Not Here to Be Liked focuses on such important and contemporary issues as not only feminism, its main topic, but alsothe sexism and misoginy that, sadly, is very present nowadays; at the same time that they border on racism。 The characters, at the beginning, have some foundamental views and ideals that are, so to speak, bordering on “contempt and disregard” for the opposite sex, at the same time that they don’t realize their internilized misoginy against other girls。 But, throughout the course of the story, they have a very good character development while they begin to understand what feminism really means and which ways they can use in order to fight against the patriarchy that is highly present in today's society。 Eliza, Winona and Serena, the three main protagonists, have an amazing development and an amazing relationship。 With them we explore this ubiverse of racism and misoginy, and the different ways to fight it while learning along the way。 How they learn that they also have some internalize mysoginy, and how that is something that needs to change。 I got really emotional everytime they tried to fight for their rights, and how much they grew up。 At the same time it is important to mention Len, the love interest of the story, who also plays a big role in Eliza’s - the main character - development。 I have to mention that I REALLY ENJOYED all the romance parts, even though there were not many of them。 They were just adorably cute and wholesome that I just wanted to have a relationship like that。 They had a good slow burn romance mixing some enemies-to-lovers that had me emotional during the whole book and wanting more of them。 Can someone bring me a boyfriend like Len DiMartile please? Thank you。 (I know it’s not important but I died when he remembered her order)。 The only thing that saddens me is not having Len’s POV, because we did not get to know very well neither him nor his thoughts。I found it amazing that this is Michelle Quach’s first work, for it is done absolutley lovely。 I’m looking forward to reading her next books。 。。。more

I picked this one up once but couldn't get into it。 Everything about it annoyed me。But the second time, I stuck it out because, gradually, I began to like the characters。The story, itself, wasn't anything new or wow for me。 And by the latter, I mean it had some cliches we encounter in many books, movies and teen TV series。The message that came through was a pretty powerful one, though。The main lead, Eliza, is a first generation American born from Chinese-Vietnamese parents who immigrated to the I picked this one up once but couldn't get into it。 Everything about it annoyed me。But the second time, I stuck it out because, gradually, I began to like the characters。The story, itself, wasn't anything new or wow for me。 And by the latter, I mean it had some cliches we encounter in many books, movies and teen TV series。The message that came through was a pretty powerful one, though。The main lead, Eliza, is a first generation American born from Chinese-Vietnamese parents who immigrated to the US for a better life。 They worked hard and put up with many things, in order for Eliza and her sister, Kim to have more options and everything they wanted to achieve。Eliza is running to become editor at her school newspaper, even though it would have been a sure win。 But her world is tilted off its axis when the newest member to join, Len (the other main lead) runs, as well and ends up winning。That's when Eliza decides enough is enough and patriarchy needs to go down。 She's a feminist, but she gets called all kinds of nasty stuff。 But, along the way, people join her cause and it becomes this huge thing。And of course that, in the mean time, she gets to know her opponent, Len (whom she actually called "patriarchy" and many jokes were made about this, throughout the novel) and kind of begins to develop feelings for him。Now the plot is more complex than what I've written here, so if you like the enemies-to-lovers trope, talks about feminism, sexism and misogyny - and don't mind some cliches - then I recommend you read this book。P。S。 I really believe the author intended for neither of the characters to be liked, at first but for them to gradually grow on you。 I mean, I'm a huge fan of Len and his smile。I voluntarily agreed to read a copy via Netgalley。 Thank you to the publishers。 My rating is 3。5 - 4 stars。 。。。more
